DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Heavy lake enhanced snow expected. Total accumulations between 6 and 10 inches. Winds gusting as high as 30 mph on Monday. * WHERE...Southern Erie County. * WHEN...From 10 PM this evening to 7 AM EST Tuesday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning and evening commutes. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Light snow will transition to bands of heavier lake enhanced snow tonight and persist through Monday. Periods of moderate to heavy snowfall are expected, with the heaviest snowfall likely on Monday morning.
INSTRUCTION: If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission strongly encourage motorists to heed all travel restrictions and delay unnecessary travel. A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless,
smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud,
because it is thicker.
Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat
of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate
before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.

Precipitation in the form of water droplets is called rain.

an observable effect on rainfall, due to an effect called the urban heat island.
Compared to upwind, monthly rainfall between twenty and forty miles downwind of
cities is 30% greater.
